Path of Exile Item Upgrading
In Path of Exile, item upgrading is one of the best ways to improve your gear without relying upon large-ticket drops or trade. This article will teach you how to upp your items effectively.
Upgrades to equipment give an additional bonus to the item's stats. The bonus increases with upgrade component's level and rarity.
Components
Upgrade components can make your armour and weapons stronger. You can acquire them by fighting off enemies, locating them in spheres of items or buying them from karma dealers. You can also salvage them from equipment that has the components or by using high-tier salvage kits such as Black Lion Salvage Kit and Ascended Salvage Tool. Upgrade components aren't destroyed when you remove them from the item.
Upgrade components are primarily used to improve an item however, they can also be used for other purposes. They can be stacked to increase the level of an upgradeable item, or they can be used to boost the amount of experience gained from upgrading an existing weapon or piece of gear. They can be made for additional bonuses. For instance, a specially created glyph can increase the upgrade chance of its target, and an upgrade boost will increase the attack or defense attribute of a weapon or armor.
item upgrader can connect an upgrade template to an item by selecting it from the edition GUI. It will display a list of upgrade components that the item can be upgraded to. You can also use the workbench to select an upgrade template. In either scenario, the item will be upgraded after enough upgrade components have been collected.
Each component has its own experience multiplier that affects how much more experience an item will gain when it is upgraded with that component. Organic components, for instance have more experience multipliers than mechanical components. It is therefore recommended to upgrade with organic components until you have reached the multiplier of experience for the next rank of the weapon or gear, and then move to mechanical upgrades.
In addition to the experience multiplier Each item also comes with a maximum number of upgrades it can receive. The number of items that can be upgraded is determined by their upgradeable rank, and the kind of upgrade they can receive. For instance, the highest possible upgrade for a weapon is a weapon of tier 10. The most common weapon upgrade is a tier 6 gun and a armor upgrade of tier 5.
Sets
A set is a collection of objects that share the same bonus. Each item can be upgraded at the minimum once. The upgrade boosts the bonuses that are guaranteed. The first time you upgrade an item, its primary stat will be +1. After subsequent upgrades, the primary stats are enhanced even more (for instance the +1 bonus for 12+/13+/14+) and every time an item is upgraded, one of its stats will increase randomly.
Upgrades to a weapon may increase the damage base, which may be important for some builds. However, weapons are not upgraded to a higher defense base than their base. It's possible to increase the value of specific sets and unique items by upgrading them, but they're not always superior to a high-level Runeword.
If the item you're upgrading has a guarantee bonus, it can be rerolled once and the guarantee will be reset to zero. Rerolling will cost the same amount of power dice as bringing an item, but the new item will have various bonuses. Upgrades can be completed at the NPC [Armor] Boboko in the Central Flarine. To upgrade an item, you'll need a power die of each kind (Dice 4 or 6 drop from monsters 21+ and Giants; Dice 7 drops from bosses) and the right amount of Minerals and Erons. They can be purchased by using Gold at the crafting table, or in the Ultra Collection. NPCs also offer special rewards for each stage of the upgrade process. The reward can be rerolled one time with the same materials as original item.
Rerolling
A player is able to reroll any item acquired in the game if they have enough tokens to be able to do so. When an upgraded item is being rerolled, it can be exchanged for a level 1 version of the same item in a different set. Reroll tokens can be purchased at the store for small amounts of in-game currency, however they aren't refundable. The new item will have the same extra bonuses like the first, however the stats will also be different.
In addition to rerolling items, players can also change the identity of any equipment by engaging with an upgrader NPC. This will change the identity from a weapon to armor or vice versa, all the while maintaining its base stats and the attributes it requires. The change is permanent and will affect all characters who are wearing the gear.
Players can also increase the level of their item on any equipped device by obtaining upgrade items and conversing with the NPC who upgrades the item. This will cost a certain amount of crests as well as Valorstones dependent on the upgrade track and the item type. In the case of weapons, each step will add an additional five percent to the damage.
Upgrades can increase the power of an item, however they also decrease its quality. It is therefore important to strike a balance between the two. Leveling

I think it was meant to be a way to add value to rare items, but since the majority of gear drops quickly and can only be upgraded after a certain amount of levels and you'll typically replace the item before it becomes old enough. It's also not worthwhile to level items that have gem sockets since the value of the gem will far outweigh the increase in ilvl with the upgrade.
If you click the upgrade option on an item, you will get a small screen with the upgrade template of the item as well as the cost of Valorstone and crest to increase the item level. The cost will differ between the armor and weapons, with the former usually costing more than the latter. The upgrade template outlines the stats that can be added to an upgraded item along with its current ilvl.
The crest and Valorstone costs are calculated by analyzing the item's current ilvl and the upgrade template. The ilvl will also be reduced by the upgrade templates reduction percentage of lvl. For instance, an upgrade of 8% will reduce the weapon's ilvl by 8 to 88%.
The item will receive upgrades to other stats, like critical strike damage, PvE damage, and block, parry and dodge rating in addition to the base ilvl. These enhancements are also based on the upgrade template.
The amount of defense and damage the item will receive when it is leveled can be shown below the upgrade cost and decrease percentages in the upgrade template window. All armor and weapons apart from practice equipment gain these stats upon leveling up. The value of these stats will be dictated by the market, with a perfectly perfectly rolled version of a piece of armor or weapon able to command much more trade value than non-upp'd versions.
